Concept Generation and Sketching: Correlations with Design Outcome
نویسنده
چکیده
Design outcome is influenced by many hard-to-measure factors in the design process. This paper examines four of these factors to understand their possible correlation with design success. First, is the quantity of design concepts linked to design outcome? Second, is the timing of concept generation associated with design outcome? In both of these cases, the sketches created by designers were taken as evidence of concept generation. Third, is the type of sketch linked to design outcome? And finally, what is the role of a novice designer’s prior experience in design outcome? Statistically significant correlations were found between dimensioned drawings generated at the early stages of design and design outcome, and also between a novice designer’s prior fabrication and building experience and design outcome. Ultimately, the goal of this research is to develop paradigms for appropriate graphicsand text-based information tools for design.

Observations on concept generation and sketching in engineering design
The generation of ideas is an essential element in the process of design. One suggested approach to improving the quality of ideas is through increasing their quantity. In this study, concept generation is examined via brainstorming, morphology charts and sketching. Statistically significant correlations were found between the quantity of brainstormed ideas and design outcome. In some, but not ...
متن کاملInsights on Designers’ Sketching Activities in New Product Design Teams
This paper describes an empirical study of student designers’ sketching activities in new product design teams. A comprehensive list of metrics associated with sketches is identified and their relative level of importance at different stages in the design process is evaluated. Correlations between sketching activities, variety of the concept sketches, and design outcomes are presented. Results ...
متن کاملAn Analysis of Sketching Skill and Its Role in Early Stage Engineering Design
Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of sketching in design cognition, particularly in the early stages of engineering design. The goal of this preliminary study is to consider the role of a designer’s sketching ability and to examine the potential link between sketching skill and measures of engineering design performance. Sketching ability was evaluated on three distinct aspects ...
متن کاملCurrent Discussions on Digital Sketching in the Early Stages of Architectural Design in Education
In the architectural design, designers are focused on the early stages of the design process or conceptual design. The ultimate goal of this stage is to find a solution for an existing problem, investigate design space, or explore an idea. This stage conventionally begins with sketches and diagrams to explore ideas and solutions; the ambiguity and vagueness of conventional freehand sketching ca...
متن کاملDoes Sketching Skill Relate to Good Design?
Sketching is an activity that takes place throughout the engineering design process, and is often linked to design cognition. This preliminary study identifies different skills that contribute to a designer’s sketching ability and explores how those skills might be related to sketch fluency and design outcome. A positive correlation was found between the quantity of sketches produced and sketch...
